Crazy, Crazy, CrazyLegs!

Ahhh...another year running the Crazylegs Classic. An 8K that I usually run with a small group (including my sister) but this year ran it alone. The possibility of rain sometimes steers people away I guess.
The rain didn't ruin this pavement pounding party and I managed to run it in 42:43! Took almost 18 minutes just to get to the start!
I love this event because it is fun, full (but non unmanageable), and is a great distance...one I can run with some challenge and still manage to get my training miles in the next day.
So my crazy legs did just that.
This morning I had to go to my tri clinic. I mounted the bike on the rack for the first time and it was there when I made my destination across town! New helmet firmly atop the noggin and away I went, with team, on a ten mile journey through town. Not a fan.
I am a runner so I am used to cars not seeing me as I cross the street but, for the most part I get the safety of the sidewalk and crosswalks. Not on a bike! Right there, with my two wheels, among the massiveness of the automobiles. I have never really ridden out amongst the threatening contraptions of steel and I was pretty nervous.
I was able to enjoy some of the ride when we meandered out onto a few less traveled roads. I was with friends and those who, literally, steered me in the right directions and gave me great tips on moving with traffic. It's just very new to me.
So- ten miles of biking and right into a two mile run. Can you say jello-leggos? Took me a mile to get my stride! That didn't happen when I went from the stationary bike to the treadmill!
Pounded out two miles then came home for another 8...Grand total for the day: 10!
Back up to 20 next week!
I have three runs after my 20...I plan to run 12, 10, then 6 the week before the mary. I am a week off. This sound like a good taper or should I try another longer run after my 20 miler?
Appreciate any feedback!

18 Miles and Tri Clinic in Between!

What a day!
I spent the majority of the day working out! I met a fab gal to run with this morning and we hammered out 7 miles, then headed to the gym for a spinning class, followed by swim drills, then back on the road for another 10 plus miles! Whew!
I have yet to find the best recovery foods. My stomach, ever since going vegan, is very touchy on what it will tolerate during and after a run. Suggestions?
I did find an energy food yesterday and tried those in between. They are called Simbree energy bites (I have the almond pistachio). I think they taste great and my stomach was fine when I ate them after class and before the run #2.
My run went a little slower than usual but it seemed best since the added training in between was more than I am used to. Love my new shoes. My IT band had been really tight so I went to the local running store and they hooked me up with Lunarglides (love the name and color!) and a pair of Saucony Guides. The Lunarglides got me through the miles today (bless them) and no pain!
I saw someone in class with Bondi Bands! I am going to order some TODAY! I think it is a sign that they are everywhere I look!
I am recovering slowly. Have my compression socks on (love them) and the man helped me stretch real good. I am going to stretch again before bed (early one tonight!).
Excited for the Madison Marathon...I just hope the sister is healed and ready to run with me!

Run, Bike, Swim, Repeat...ow

This week was something of a challenge...
It was my first week of my triathlon training so trying to incorporate my marathon training with that was tricky. I got some advice from my coaches and tries to get in a couple miles with my biking and swimming days. The...
Thursday. Ah Thursday how you hit me like a ton of bricks...
Thursday I had to teach a lower body strengthening class and then get in my brick workout (bike followed by a run). Leaving class with a little stiffness should have been my first clue that my strengthening class whooped me but I trudged on to the gym anyway.
Friday morning did not come softly. OUCH! My quads and glutes have been sore ever since! I sit and I moan. I stand and I moan.
Friday I swam and it felt a little better. No running.
Today I taught an upper body class. I then went to the bike and trail for a brick workout again. Bike was okay...6 miles in 30 minutes.
Run was tough. Took me a while to get my stride and not feel like someone was clawing at my quads. I walked a little (my pride took the pain of that) and then ran the last half of a quick 15 minute run. The rest of the day was a repeat of the "ouches" that consumed my day prior.
Sigh...what will tomorrow bring?
I have an 18 miler scheduled. I plan to run almost half of it before my Tri clinic (which consists of dynamic stretching, biking, swimming) then the other half after the clinic. I foresee many walk breaks and that does not make me happy.
Lesson Learned.

New Days are a Comin'

Went to my first Tri clinic today and am amazed that when one is given the feedback and proper instruction on things like form and speed...one can do amazing things!
I joined this 8 week training program because this is my first Triathlon and I am a runner. Not a swimmer, not a biker. A runner.
A runner will run, most times, before doing any other form of exercise. At least I do. Maybe that's why I am also becoming more injury-prone?
So- I feel like I can swim now. The bike thing- eh. I need some cushion shorts and maybe I will feel better about that part.

Interesting conversation followed class today. I had asked when I should run my long runs now with the tri clinic being on Sundays. Keep running them Saturdays or run them the same day as the tri clinic?
What is your mileage?
My last long, long run was 16 miles?
What???

So- to make a long conversation shorter I came home with the impression that I should only be running 13-15 miles on my long runs. I have run my last three marathons peaking at 20 miles, then tapering.
I am looking for more information on this, since all the training plans I have seen consist of long runs gradually increasing to 20-22 miles (with recovery weeks splashed here and there) then a taper before the race.

Any thoughts on this one??
