Well...just three days until the Madison Marathon! I have to say this last weeks has been a doozy so far!
I felt good at the last trial run of the triathlon so decided to take my kickboxing class Monday. BIG mistake.
IT band injury...welcome back! This time it was a muscle in my rear and side/hip. After two nervous and maddening days I called a PT...prepared myself for the possibility of dropping to the half.
She worked on that certain spot and boy was it painful! Real tight! She gave me some tips and an exercise to do to strengthen the muscle and made no mention of me dropping down to the half...in fact she assured me she would help me to get through the run. Insert sigh of relief.
So- I finally went out for a run today. Just an east three miles, the stretched, rolled, and am icing as we speak.
I was starting to get nervous last week but now I am really nervous. Any advice?

Tapering...well, trying.
2 weeks from today I will be running my 4th marathon (5th endurance event) so it is safe to say I am in "Taper-Mode".
So- here is a taste of my weekend of tapering...
Saturday- Ran a local 5k in 24:38 and finished 2nd in my division! Hip was a little tight but finished strong and worked hard.
Followed this by 4 hours of creating a beautiful garden, that I am sharing with family. Sore feet and food intake was not stellar for my Sunday workout.
Sunday (today) I had my tri class at 9 am. I got more than halfway out there only to realize I had forgotten my bike helmet (sigh).
Open water swim (hello jello arms!) with two tears in my wetsuits (argh!), followed by 15 on the bike and then a 3 mile run. Felt great!
Marathon schedule called for 10 mile run so I got home then met a friend and ran another 5...this should be okay with the other workouts, right? I mean, 8 miles instead of ten but add in the swim and bike and I feel like this is fine. Thoughts?
So- my bike. Let's chat about my bike...well- let me tell you about my bike and then you offer feedback. :)
My bike- I won it at an 8K about five years ago, Rode it some but it is getting most of its use now. It is a mountain bike (Fugi) so when I went into our local bike shop for advice and tri gear they suggested getting lighter wheels. When I sent it in for its tune-up, I had them switch out my monstrous tires for the lighter ones and I love the difference it makes. So- as I am out training with the group, I notice I don't get the speed I want. I hit a hit (decline) and I have to stop peddling because I cannot push the bike anymore...no more gears to switch to! It frustrates me because I want to be able to go faster but my feet just wildly spin at the last gear.
I also don't feel like I get the aerodynamics that others do since my handlebars are mountain bike bars I crouch down and that helps a little but not like it could if I had the other bike bars.
I rode someones bike today, with clips, and it felt a lot better. My dilemma is that I have not even completed my first tri yet, so I know I should wait to upgrade...to make sure this is something I will like to do more (I am pretty sure I already know I will want to) but I also want a bike that will make me so much better.
I don't have the $ to get a new bike so would like to hear any feedback on upgrades I could have done to my bike to help with these situations. Anyone?
Thanks! I appreciate your time to respond!

Yawn
The workouts sure can catch up to me!
Saturday I ran 8 with the sister and then her knee was bothering her. She has since decided to drop to the half mary of Madison.
Sunday was a tri workout...12 bike, 3 run, and a dip in the lake...brrrr!
Monday was kickboxing class, AKA "Rest".
Tuesday was a swim (8x25 easy, 8x25 drill, 4x75 then 4x150, and 4x50 easy) and a two mile run.
Today- drained. Intended workout is 60 min bike and 25 min run. What I am really doing? Resting!
Why do I feel so guilty when I take a day off? I feel like when I see that workout in my training plan I MUST do it instead of hearing my body yelling "Rest!".
Well...I am taking today off. Guilt or no guilt.
Tomorrow 60 min bike and 40 min run.
So there.

Weekend Warrior
After a full weekend of running and biking and swimming and getting a horrible sunburn (duh on my part) I feel like this attempt at a marathon and triathlon all in the same week is attainable...
Ran my 20 miler yesterday and that is where the dreaded sunburn came to be. I have a routine before my long runs. Wake up, Clif Bar, coffee, bathroom, sunscreen, hydrate, bathroom, hydrate, sunscreen, body glide, gear #2, shoes, run. This was not the way my morning started as I had to teach a class and complete my coaching responsibilities before running which put my long run all outta order. sigh
I felt a little tired the first few miles but luckily I had my beloved crew biking with me so he kept me going. I finally got into my stride and felt good about mile 4-5 and didn't even stop to think that the blaring sun and open road would be an issue later.
Saw a few fellow runners out getting in the mileage. One guy had his parents out crew-ing for him and we got a small chat in (they even offered me water) before parting ways. Runners are such kind people!
By mile six we had made our way to a local Arboretum and hit the trail there for an added mile. Did I mention that on the road to the park we had the pleasure of spotting a couple deer heads in the ditch. Ew.
The park was nice and shaded with a soft trail and by the time we left I had gotten to 8 miles. Dear crew-boy was not impressed. He was convinced we had gotten to at least 10 miles. Sorry! Just seems like it!
Made our way back to the road we had been on earlier and back to the burbs. Harder to have a bike crew in the neighborhoods. We went to another area park and hit the trail there. I ran 3-4 loops while crew-boy napped on a picnic table. Um...I am pretty sure that wasn't in the contract. :)
After hearing Lady Nike+ give me the "6 miles to go" we headed back to the homestead. I was starting to really feel the mileage and crew-boy had some things to finish before we headed out of town (after the run) so I got home with about 4 miles to go and made my way to the gym where I finished up on the mill. I figure that saved me an extra layer of sun damage.
20 miles completed! It feels so good to have that peak finished! I am off plan by a week so next weekend's long run is being determined by the sister. She is coming back from injury and is trying to manage some miles that will enable her to run the mary with me, as we had planned. Then back on track with the final two weeks of tapering!
I cannot believe the marathon is so close!
Today I had my tri clinic so we swam 10 laps, biked 10 miles, and I put a grueling 2 miles as a finale. Something tells me with all this training the marathon will be okay...
By the way- Got my Bondi Bands and LOVE them!!!!
I have a beautiful tan line from the one I wore yesterday- right across the forehead!!
Tomorrow back to kickboxing and the rest of the day I am taking it easy!!
